Description

Utility Hunter – Nitro V **

This knife is my own design and is inspired by 3 American Knives.  The Bark River – Fox River and their Fox River Ext 2.  Both of these knives have a great feel to them as hunting knives and can be utilised for bushcraft purposes.  The 3rd knife is the White River Hunter which is also a very nice knife.  My Utility Hunter is probably a cross between those 3.  It has thicker steel than my pure Hunting Knife so could probably do a bit of light bushcrafting.  I made this Utility Hunter using Nitro V steel so it has great corrosion resistance.  The knife has been Heat Treated to 62 Rockwell by Ausmaker supplies in Sydney.

Nitro-V — The Ideal Steel for Folding Knives and EDC?

In 2017, the world was introduced to Nitro-V stainless steel for the first time — and it caused a real sensation. And no wonder: its balance of hardness, corrosion resistance, and ease of maintenance at such an attractive price is hard to beat. Ideal as EDC or folding knife steel! It’s definitely a material worth talking about.

What is Nitro-V Steel?

Nitro-V is a modern stainless steel developed by New Jersey Steel Baron (NJSB). It is an enhanced version of AEB-L, upgraded with added nitrogen and a small amount of vanadium. These adjustments improve wear resistance and edge stability, especially important for folding knives and EDC tasks.

Corrosion Resistance and Environmental Durability

Nitro-V is widely praised for its strong corrosion resistance and dependable performance in challenging environments! Its combination of high chromium content and added nitrogen gives it better protection against rust than many comparable stainless steels in the same hardness range. This makes Nitro-V an excellent choice for users who expect their EDC knives to face unpredictable weather, moisture, sweat, or long periods of carry without constant upkeep.

Performance in Wet and Marine Conditions

Nitro-V performs exceptionally well in wet, humid, and even salt-rich environments. The elevated chromium levels help prevent oxidation, while nitrogen improves the steel’s ability to resist pitting corrosion—a common issue in marine settings. Whether carried near the ocean, exposed to sweat during daily use, or used for food prep outdoors, Nitro-V maintains its integrity with minimal risk of rust. This makes it a strong candidate for fishing knives, boating gear, and EDC knives used in coastal areas.

Outdoor and Expedition Testing

When put to the test in outdoor and expedition scenarios, Nitro-V excels thanks to its combination of toughness and corrosion resistance. It tolerates rapid temperature changes, moisture exposure, and contact with dirt or organic materials without degrading. Even after extended time outdoors—such as multi-day hikes, camping trips, or survival scenarios—Nitro-V tends to remain free of rust spots and maintains functional sharpness. Its resistance to both impact and corrosion allows it to be relied upon in environments where maintenance opportunities are limited!

Long-Lasting Durability Without Extra Maintenance

One of Nitro-V’s most appealing qualities for everyday users is how little care it requires to stay in good condition. Unlike some high-performance folding knife steel options that demand regular oiling or specialized coatings, Nitro-V remains stable with minimal upkeep. A quick wipe-down after use is usually enough. It resists staining, rust formation, and surface oxidation even when carried daily in a pocket or used in damp settings. This low-maintenance durability makes Nitro-V particularly attractive for EDC knives intended for real-world, long-term use.

Composition and Properties of Nitro-V

Typical chemical composition:

  • Carbon (C): ~0.68% – contributes to hardness
  • Chromium (Cr): ~13% – ensures stainless properties
  • Nitrogen (N): ~0.1% – boosts hardness and wear resistance without losing toughness
  • Vanadium (V): ~0.1% – forms fine, stable carbides
  • Small amounts of manganese and silicon – help refine the steel’s structure

Key performance characteristics:

  • Hardness: 59–62 HRC (sometimes up to 63 HRC)
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Strong edge stability
  • High toughness
  • Easy to sharpen

Key Advantages of Nitro-V for Everyday Use

  • Exceptional corrosion resistance
Nitro-V performs very well in humid climates and during daily carry, even with exposure to sweat or food.
  • Easy to sharpen
Unlike many powder steels (M390, S35VN, etc.), Nitro-V sharpens quickly and predictably, even with simple field sharpeners.
  • Strong performance at thin edge geometry
It can be ground very thin without chipping, making it great for cutting tasks like slicing cardboard, rope, packaging, and food.
  • Stable working sharpness
While it doesn’t hold an edge as long as top-tier powder steels, Nitro-V maintains a useful, consistent level of sharpness for everyday tasks.
  • Excellent value
Nitro-V offers a very favorable price-to-performance ratio. For many EDC users, its practical performance rivals more expensive steel

This particular knife has a sabre convex grind with a heat treat finish.

The handle scales are Gidgee, with Black Micarta, Black Micarta Liners and Spacers.  3 x Brass Spacers. Brass pins.

** If you look closely you might notice that the Brass spacers do not line up perfectly on both sides.  Mechanically there is nothing wrong with the knife.  Because of this, I have discounted the knife accordingly

The sheath is made with Hermann Oak Leather
