Terms and Conditions & Frequently Asked Questions

The majority of manufacturing is carried out in my workshop which is located near the ACT in Australia.

The Maranoa Gidgee used on a lot of the knife handles is sourced from the Maranoa region which is located in South Western Queensland. All timber is well and truly aged (dead) and is usually laying on the ground. I find and cut the timber myself. All other timbers are sourced from Trend Timbers who are located in Sydney. Most of the Micarta and G10 I also use on the handles is sourced from Artisan Supplies and Nordic Edge who are both located in Sydney

RJ Heat Treatment do all of my heat treatment. They are located in Moorebank, Sydney. They are a 3rd generation family business who know what they are doing. I have personally tested all batches of knives that are returned from RJ Heat Treatment and the edge retention and toughness for each particular steel is exceptional.

The leather used in my sheaths is either cow or buffalo hide tanned by Birdsall’s Leather who are located in Sydney. Birdsalls was the original tannery established in Australia and is now being run by the 5th generation. I personally select each hide that I purchase.

Acacia Cambagei or Gidgee is an Australian tree from the Wattle family. It grows predominantly in South Western Queensland. Gidgee is highly sought after for its depth of colour, beautiful lines and extreme hardness.  The slow growing Gidgee thrives in arid, challenging terrains. Being a heavy timber (1.3 tones per cubic meter), and classified as the 3rd hardest wood in the world (according to The Wood Data Base), Gidgee blunts tools with ease. There are fences in Queensland that have been erected for over 100 years that still have their original Gidgee posts intact. Amongst knife makers globally, Gidgee is one of the top 5 most highly sought after timbers. I use it because it’s tough, it’s dark, the grain can be spectacular and it’s Australian. Gidgee is a challenge for me to get hold of, but I enjoy a challenge.

These knives are hand made by me. Before purchasing a knife, you should look at all of the pictures carefully. Some of the knives do not have the level of finish that some of the others have and will be discounted accordingly. If you are unsure, please contact me for more information on any particular knife. As I’m still in the prototype stage, some of the knives were developed primarily for functional testing. They are all strong knives and will more than stand up to their intended use – they however may not be as pretty as a standard factory manufactured knife.

If you are unhappy with your purchase, for whatever reason, you are welcome to return the knife within 7 days for a full refund of the purchase price. Refunds do not include any shipping charges paid at time of purchase or any shipping cost that you may have incurred returning the knife. The knife being returned must be in original condition including all packing materials supplied at time of purchase.

Currently Maranoa Knives is not taking custom orders. Maranoa Knives is still in the developmental stage so many of the knives for sale are prototypes and are therefore discounted – sometimes well below what the materials cost. Otherwise we manufacture our knives in small batches so the 3 or 4 you see of a certain style may not be available again for some time. Having said that, if you are really keen for a certain combination of knife, email me and we’ll see how we go.

Yes I’m happy to give your knife a buff and sharpen at no charge to you. You will need to return the knife at your own expense and I will ship it back to you at my expense. This is for Australian customers only.

If you are heading through the Canberra region and would like to look at some knives, please let me know and I’ll see what we can organise.

All prices are inclusive of GST. The GST component will be shown at checkout.

The material input costs to a knife are the steel, heat treatment, scale materials, liners and pins plus the materials for the sheath and firesteel (if it has one). A few of the knives currently for sale on this site are heavily discounted as they were developed as prototypes or the finish standard may not be as high as other knives. In a few cases, some of the knives discounted prices will not cover the raw materials that went into the manufacture of that knife. Generally, retail prices will be derived from the material costs + 20%. The 20% covers consumables like grinding belts, polishing compounds and sand paper and also covers electricity and the plant machinery costs….there maybe a little bit left over for me as well.

All steel will eventually rust. You should oil the blade of your knife after use and/or when storing for extended periods. Any oil will do. I personally use Ballistol which is a food safe universal oil. If you have a leather sheath I would not store the knife in the sheath for extended periods without checking the blade every now and then.

The timber scales on Maranoa knives have been oiled with our proprietary treatment that contains Linseed Oil, Shellac and some other ingredients. The treatment highlights the timber’s grain but more importantly protects the timber from harsh environments. In the future Maranoa will have available a beeswax version of our timber treatment (now available in the Shop).

All Maranoa knife sheaths are supplied raw (not oiled). You can oil the sheath with a good quality leather dressing but you may cause the sheath to lose its’ wetformed shape. If you’re not worried about losing the wetformed shape then oiling it is a good way to go. We also have a Beeswax based leather care product available exclusively in the Shop.

Free express shipping within Australia is supplied on orders over $150.00. Shipping is via Australia Post. A flat shipping rate is applied for orders less than $150.00.

International shipping is not included. Please contact me to discuss options for international shipping and cost.
